Over a third of Irish people have gone on and activity adventure holiday, and of those who haven't, more than 60 per cent would be open to giving it a go.
That's the finding of a new survey, carried out by Hotels.com, which looked into Irish people's fitness levels. The survey found that water sports and cycling getaways proved the most popular. However, 7 out of 10 Irish people admit to being unhappy with their current fitness levels.
When it comes to working out when staying in a hotel for business or leisure, almost half (48%) said they might go to the gym if they have time and a motivated 10% said they always try to fit in a workout, even when travelling.
The research into Ireland’s exercise habits reveals that one fifth of people rate themselves as a number three on a one to ten scale of fitness; with 1 being very unfit and 10 being very fit. 38% of those surveyed exercise 2-3 times a week and 14% admit that they rarely workout. Work commitments, lack of motivation and social life are cited as the top three obstacles when it comes to fitness and activity, followed closely by family commitments and cost. Only 1 in 10 said that they always make the effort to exercise.
Despite half of those surveyed said that they are a member of a gym, a quarter of Irish people have tried a ‘fad’ diet, 15% have tried a juice detox and a further 15% have taken part in a fitness bootcamp. Celebrity diets and fitness programmes appear to have lost favour, with only 7% admitting to have tried one.
The top three fitness goals people would like to achieve are to run 10k, run a marathon and climb a mountain.
