Travel warning issued to LGBT people travelling to USA

Cassie Delaney

A travel warning has been issued to the LGBT community about certain regions of America.

The British Foreign Office released the alert, warning travellers to be aware of controversial new laws in North Carolina and Mississippi.

The statement reads:

“The US is an extremely diverse society and attitudes towards LGBT people differ hugely across the country. LGBT travellers may be affected by legislation passed recently in the states of North Carolina and Mississippi.”

In North Carolina, the controversial HB2 law was passed last month, limiting LGBT protections and forcing transgender people to use bathrooms corresponding to the gender assigned to them at birth.

The law has received global criticism. Mississippi’s law, passed earlier this month, allows businesses to refuse custom to gay couples based on religious objections.

The laws have received global criticism with Bruce Springsteen, Ringo Star and Pearl Jam all cancelling appearances in North Carolina.
