Turns Out We Are All a Bit Confused About When The Twelve Days Of Christmas Are

Do you know when they are?!

Megan Cassidy

It’s all well and good harping on about the twelve days of Christmas and my true love and all that…

But have you ever stopped to think about what dates the twelve days actually fall on?

Here in Her Towers, we were very confused, and from that we deduct that you might be too.

While some of us thought that December 1st – December 12th were the twelve days (because of the advent calendar), others argued that the twelve days start on the 12th and finish on Christmas Eve, the 24th.

We did a little investigative journalism and found that the twelve days of Christmas actually start on the 25th of December and finish on the fifth of January.

According to journalnow.com, the “12 Days” Christmas song dates all the way back to the 1700s, and probably started as a memory game:

“It possibly began as a Twelfth Night ‘memory-and-forfeits’ game in which the leader recited a verse, each of the players repeated the verse, the leader added another verse, and so on until one of the players made a mistake, with the player who erred having to pay a penalty.”

Truth or Dare, how are ya?
