Twelve Stunning Irish Sights You Have To See

Road trip?!

Cathy Donohue

Only two days to go to the weekend *YAY* and we’re thinking a road-trip is a must.

Whether you want a chilled out coastal break or a challenging cliff hike, you’re guaranteed to find it in our lovely country.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of some of the most beautiful spots in Ireland.

1. Culdaff Beach, Co Donegal

Golden sand and glistening aqua waves, this beach is a thing of beauty. Located on the north east coast of the Inishowen Peninsula, a brisk walk here will soon blow the cobwebs off and breathing in the fresh sea air is one way to shake stress off.

2. Achill Island, Co Mayo

With gourmet seafood, warm welcomes and breath-taking cliff views, it’s no surprise that Achill Island is one of Ireland’s highly recommended destinations when it comes to staycations. The largest island in the country, it is accessible by bridge and we can’t wait for a return visit.

3. The Giant’s Causeway, Co Antrim

It has been referred to as the eighth wonder of the world and after visiting the 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, you’ll understand exactly why. Although it has always been touted as a must-see spot, it has become even more popular recently as scenes from HBO series Game of Thrones were filmed here.

4. Skellig Michael, Co Kerry

Described by playwright George Bernard Shaw as an “incredible, impossible, mad place”, the monastic remains of Skellig Michael are a sight to behold. Travel 12km west of Kerry’s Iveragh Peninsula and you’ll feel like you’re in another world entirely.

5. Birr Castle, Co Offaly

If you’ve ever dreamed of being a princess for a day, Birr Castle is the perfect place to channel castles and crowns. If you’re a history buff, the science center is well worth a visit and there’s a quaint little cafe if you just want to kick back with coffee and cake (YES PLEASE).

6. Mannin Beach, Co Galway

This little roadside beach is picturesque thanks to the coralline reddish-coloured seaweed and bright white sand. Located southwest of Clifden, it’s a very popular spot for snorkelling and other water-based activities.

7. Glen of Aherlow, Co Tipperary

You’ll find this scenic valley between Slievenamuck and the Galtee Mountains (near Tipperary town). Sixteen miles of beautiful countryside is pretty impressive and the local inhabitants are treated to some stunning views on a daily basis.

8. Howth Harbour, Co Dublin

Mention Dublin and immediately you think of busy streets and plenty of noise. However, half an hour from the city centre you’ll find Howth Harbour. The old tram track route, Howth hill and the looping harbour walk mean there’s a trail to suit every pace.

9. Beara Peninusla, Co Cork

Walk, cycle or drive…there’s plenty of ways to experience Beara Peninsula. There’s even a cable car from Dursey Island to the mainland if you feel like taking in the views from the air. Vast lakes and rugged mountains ensure A-MAZ-ING so photos make sure to bring your phone and/or camera.

10. Inch Beach, Kerry

Inch Beach on Kerry’s Dingle Peninsula is one of Ireland’s most talked-about beaches which is no surprise considering the gorgeous views from every single angle. There are guesthouses and self-catering apartments and after waking up in this lovely spot, you won’t want to go back to reality. If you’ve ever fancied yourself as an extra in Home and Away, it’s also the perfect place to get a surfing lesson.

11. Cliffs of Moher

The cliffs are always popular with those visiting Ireland from abroad and if you’ve a head for heights, this is one spot you need to visit at least once. Last year, it was the second most popular tourist destination in Ireland with over a million visitors. Make sure to walk to O’Briens Tower because on a good day you’ll be able to see Aran Islands, Galway Bay, the Twelve Pins, the Maum Turk mountains in Connemara, the Blasket Islands, Loop Head and the Dingle Peninsula.

12. The Claddagh, Co Galway

Quaint cobbles, cosy pubs and award-winning restaurants mean that the City of the Tribes is a city you’ll return to time and time again. While there’s a lot to be said for the nightlife, we’re very partial to a walk by the Claddagh. Sit by the Spanish Arch with a coffee and follow this with a walk out towards Salthill to take in the beauty of Galway Bay.
