Michaella McCollum was released from jail on Friday, almost three years after she was imprisoned for possession of smuggled cocaine.
The Tyrone native, now aged 23, was arrested with her companion Melissa Reid at Lima airport after almost 11 kilos of cocaine, worth an estimated €2 million, was found in their luggage.
This evening, Michaella’s first interview since leaving jail was broadcast on RTÉ One.
Not surprisingly, Prison in Peru was a major topic of conversation on Twitter:
"I couldn't afford a deposit for a new flat so I went on a 2 month holiday to Ibiza" #MichaellaMcCollum

#MichaellaMcCollum is a convicted drug smuggler and they're discussing her big hair and life in the prison's beauty salon – bonkers

She's gonna have a tough time convincing people from now on. Talk is cheap, but everyone deserves a 2nd chance! #MichaellaMcCollum

I've seen plays less rehearsed than this #michaelamccollum PR launch.

Awful pity @vincentbrowne wasnt doing this interview. Biased and non-challenging. Naïve, young, insecure? Come out of it! #MichaellaMcCollum

Why not ask "was this your first time – or just your first time being caught?" This is a very gentle interview #MichaelaMcCollum

.@rte So #RTE banned Conor McGregor's Budweiser ad but decided to go ahead with interviewing a drug smuggler. Idiots! #MichaelaMcCollum

Dear people saying interviewing Michaela McCollum is a waste of media resources, most of media is a content bin. This is legit interesting.

Glad that #MichaellaMcCollum thing is over. Now time to watch something a little less scripted… #TOWIE ?

#MichaellaMcCollum should not be being hailed as some sort of hero. And talk of a movie being made of her life ? wise the hell up

Uneasy watching #MichaelaMcCollum interview should we give drug mules media coverage/celebrity etc. Or was she just v young & vulnerable?
