University Hospital Galway Apologises Over Death Of Savita Halappanavar

Today, June 13th, University Hospital Galway apologised for the events which led to the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar.

The hospital issued a statement to husband Praveen and family of Savita, apologising “for the events related to his wife’s care that contributed to her tragic death” .

The hospital have also confirmed that they have implemented changes which will “avoid the repeat of such an event”, according to the Irish Times.

The apology comes as a result of a report which was commissioned by the HSE to “to establish the facts and contributory factors” leading up to the death of Ms Halappanavar “and to provide recommendations”.

However, Praveen Halappanavar’s solicitor has claimed there is a strong likelihood that his client will take legal action, according to RTÉ News. Praveen has claimed there was no medical intervention on two of the days Savita was in hospital and that she was denied a termination, even though she had asked for this.

The Health Minister James Reilly told Newstalk this morning that the report had raised some “serious concerns.”
