Go on, admit it, we all got that extra pair of novelty underwear we know we’ll never wear…

Did you just leave it under the tree, hoping it would somehow be absorbed by the aftermath of Christmas or did you make a big deal of throwing it out?

Why don’t you take a leaf out of a quarter of Irish adults this year and sell the unwanted gifts online to make some extra cash for January?

The survey, on DoneDeal.ie, found that one in four Irish adults decided to flog the unwanted presents in a bid to raise some extra money for the financial struggle that is January, with mean and women equally likely to have done so.

Younger people are much more likely than older people to sell gifts on the internet to raise some cash. Thirty per cent in the 18-24 age group have done so, as against only eight per cent of those over 55.

The practice is becoming increasingly common as post-Christmas blues makes this the year’s tightest month.

When asked if they would be likely to sell unwanted presents online in the future to make some money, the number rose substantially, with 41 per cent saying they would be likely to do so.

According to the survey, almost three in five adults would now consider buying second-hand gifts online in order to save money in the future. DoneDeal.ie CEO John Warburton said: “It’s great to see so many people are now buying and selling online in Ireland.

“Why leave those unwanted gifts languishing in the back of your wardrobe gathering dust when you can sell them online and make some cash for yourself?

“It’s also a great way of saving money when buying gifts for others.”
