Grand day for the beach? So said a fair few people around the country yesterday, but the sunny occasion on Portmarnock Beach got out of hand.
According to Crime.ie, the Gardai were called and there were reports of a helicopter being sent to the scene as over 1,500 people flooded on to the beach, leading to confrontations between those who had been drinking.
This video footage of the chaos has been uploaded to YouTube within the past 24 hours and has already commanded nearly 14,000 views.
A Garda representative told The Irish Times that there had been no serious injuries or arrests, but that bottles had been thrown by the two gangs who caused the biggest fight around 6pm, although there had also been reports of several smaller incidents throughout the day.
According to the reports, many people on the beach has been consuming alcohol throughout the day. Three public order arrests were made and Gardaí maintained a heavy presence in the area late into yesterday evening and last night.
