It should have been one of the best days of his life, but Rory McIlroy was subjected to an online judge and jury immediately after playing his way to victory at his third Major Championship yesterday.
The 25-year-old Northern Ireland man came in for intense and immediate criticism after TV footage saw him apparently refuse to sign an autograph for a young fan soon after lifting the Claret Jug.
However, one of his fellow professionals took to Twitter soon after to clear up the confusion and educate McIlroy’s critics. Ian Poulter said on the social network: “Just to clear up the signature thing. We are asked not to sign autographs until we have officially handed in our scorecards. #RulesAreRules”

It wasn’t the only hitch for Rory, who thanked the local Liverpool golf fans despite his being a Manchester United supporter. That particular quip drew booing from the crowd, but it certainly wasn’t enough to dampen the spirits of the young player, who shared a snap of his own celebrations late last night.
Celebrating with the Claret Jug!! Thanks for all the support and well wishes this week! #TheOpen #3outof4 pic.twitter.com/9ZJsV62US0
