A poignant and touching video has been released online this week which focuses on people from Ireland who are no longer based here.
The footage sees Irish people talk about being away from home for the Christmas period and the joy they have when they do get to come home for the festive season. The interviews were recorded via Skype.
“Everybody has a family member who has left,” states one interviewee. “You feel disappointed and sad that you can’t get home.”
“I’m looking forward to spending Christmas with a bunch of new friends. I can’t spend it with family,” another adds.
“I think about Ireland differently, I think about Dublin, my friends and family differently. I definitely appreciate them a whole lot more,” another states. “I cherish them more when I get home.”
“If I came out of the airport and it was lashing rain I would be over the moon. It would be something comforting.”
“Part of survival is this connection with other human beings,” another reflects. “When you are plucked out of that, there’s a gaping hole in your life. I knew that months ago I didn’t want to be alone at Christmas. I want to be with my family at Christmas.”
