Guide dogs are wonderful and provide a priceless service as well as love and companionship to those who need it. Lombard was just one of these guide dogs, and this video of his journey is so touching. His trainer Hana documented the entirety of his training, from when he was a tiny puppy. However, Hana told Metro that the high-octane world of a service dog was not for Lombard: ‘He would pull hairs out of his tail, chest, and legs. At first we thought it was boredom and he needed more physical and mental stimulus but the barbering only got worse. ‘Every time he would go to a new place that was overwhelming he would go from a good working dog to an anxious itchy dog who focused more on itching himself then listening to my commands.’ She realised that perhaps a life as a guide dog would be too stressful for the anxious pup. ‘After talking to my club leaders and the organization, we decided that he’s been telling us that he no longer wants to work,’ says Hana. ‘I haven’t seen him pull a single hair out of his body since he’s been career changed!’ Lombard was adopted by Hana, renamed Gumbo and is now going to become a therapy dog.
