The county’s famous blaa bread is one of the of the five farm products that have been added to the register of Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs) with protected geographical indications.
The blaa bread, which is a soft white bread roll dates back to the 17th century and its status means that bread makers around the world will be unable to claim their products as “blaas.”
Others included on the new list were Italian cheeses Puzzone di Moena/Spretz Tzaorì and Pecorino di Picinisco, French goat’s cheese Rigotte de Condrieu and for a Slovenian soft cheese Mohant.
Waterford blaas will join other Irish products that have already been granted the designation, including Timoleague brown pudding, Connemara Hill lamb, Imokilly Regato cheese and Clare Island salmon.
