It’s the picture postcard scene we all envision when it comes to Christmas day; a white blanket on the crown and snowflakes gently landed on our hair as we venture out for the visits, well wrapped up of course…
The Christmas season has barely begun each year when talk turns to whether or not we might see a White Christmas, and this year the odds are looking good for fans of the snow.
At the moment, Dublin is at 9/4 to see a dusting of snow on the 25th, while Cork is 7/2 and Galway is 3/1. The north of Ireland is ranked as less likely to enjoy a White Christmas at this stage, with Belfast a 4/1 shot for snow.
Of course you could always travel to make sure you got the chance to make a snowman this year!
The safest bet looks to be Chicago, which is 8/11, or closer to home Berlin looks like a runner too at 5/6.
As always though, it’s best not to believe every thing you hear from the bookmakers, as Ireland’s most famous amateur weatherman has predicted a white Christmas for many areas across the country.
Donegal postman Michael Gallagher has become famous for his forecasts, made after studying the behaviour of local plants and animals.
A number of years ago he cost the bookies dearly when he predicted snow and bagged his fans a €70,000 payout – a VERY nice Christmas present!
Speaking to The Irish Examiner recently, Michael said: “All the indications and signs are that we will have a lot of snow in December and we could well have a white Christmas.
“It may not be as cold as the very harsh winter of 2011 but we’re definitely in for snow and very possibly at Christmas.”
So wrap up tight this winter just in case, and have the coal and scarf ready for that snowman…
