Australia’s football coach Holger Osieck has apologised after making a sexist remark at a press conference yesterday.
The German was being seated by officials for a post-match conference when he said a German phrase which he then translated as “women should shut up in public.”
He told reporters: “I say it to my wife at home. It is a private one, okay... And you record that one as well? I am going to be the darling of all Australia wives.”
After hearing that it caused quite the stir Osieck has since apologised and insists that his remarks were off the record.
He explained: “To everyone offended, I sincerely apologise. It was off the record... It was more meant as a joke. There was no seriousness in it.”
