Six Songs That Prove Marvin Gaye Is The Perfect Soundtrack To Your Life

The music legend would have turned 76 this week.

Her

We are big fans of Marvin Gaye here in the office and firmly believe that it’s impossible to be stressed while listening to a bit of Sexual Healing.

He may be mostly in the news lately in relation to the plagiarism battle surrounding Pharrell and Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines but the fact remains that Gaye was putting some serious grooves down before either of them were a twinkle in their father’s eye.

To celebrate his 76th birthday, here are six songs that prove Marvin Gaye is the perfect soundtrack to your life…

Let’s Get It On

Well, we had to start with this one. Aside from being an absolute belter of a tune, this is the perfect song to stick on the stereo when you bring someone home after that all important third date. If he’s a bit ‘backward about coming forward’, leave Marvin to have a word in his ear. Subtle? No, but it’ll get the job done.

Also, on the off chance that something went horribly wrong earlier in the date, this is a great one to reset the mood. Trust us on that.

What’s Going On

While many of his famous songs might be about getting jiggy with it, there’s a lot more to Marvin than the horizontal pants dance. The lyrics of this song are as relevant today as they were when it was released back in the 70s and is the perfect song for when you’re having one of those days.

Heard It Through The Grapevine

Found out your fella is cheating or a frenemy is bitching behind your back? Marvin feels your pain. This is one of the best songs ever written in our humble opinion and this live version from Montreux has become legendary.

Sexual Healing

This song has such a happy upbeat vibe that it is practically impossible to be in bad form while you’re listening to it. If you’re busy at work, stressed with study or preparing for a big date, pop in your headphones, crank it up loud and you’ll be bopping around the place in no time.

Ain’t No Mountain High Enough

This number with Tammi Terrell from 1967 is one of the all-time greatest love songs and also one of the best karaoke songs EVER. Enough said.

Got To Give It Up

This funk-disco classic was a number one hit for Gaye and is the perfect choice before a big night out. It’s also the track that Thicke and Williams have been accused of basing Blurred Lines on and after a quick listen, we can definitely hear some similarities!
