A 14-year-old girl who was out birthday shopping was allegedly told by an employee to leave because she was “too big” to shop there.

American teen Shelby Buster told news channel KEZI that she was shopping at the rue21 clothes store at the Valley River Center mall in Eugene, Oregon when she was reportedly discriminated against because of her weight. 

Shelby said that she was in the fashion store with a friend when an employee came up to her and said: “Hey, you're too big to be in this store, I need you to leave.”

When contacted by the news station, the company said that they were aware of the incident and were looking into it.

A comment by the company on their Facebook page read:

“We have investigated the claims made by Ms. Buster and to this point have been unable to substantiate them. We have been unable to corroborate that the incident actually happened. rue21 has over 950 stores nationwide.“

“We value diversity and welcome all customers in our stores. We train our associates on inclusion and do not condone discrimination in any form.“

“Behaviors like that described are unacceptable and are not by any means a directive of the company.”

The company told KEZI that they would be pulling footage from the day to investigate what happened.

Shelby described the incident as “disrespectful and rude.”

“They should have more respect and refrain from insulting people like me” she said.
