A baby girl in Kilkenny is lucky to be alive according to doctors this week after she had a dramatic entry into the world when she was delivered on the side of a road on Wednesday evening.

The baby’s mother went into labour on her way to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny and crashed her car into a roundabout on the edge of Kilkenny city. Weather conditions on the night have been described as very foggy and cold with temperatures below freezing.

A number of passers-by stopped to help out, including Eamonn and Mae Doyle from Kilkenny.

Speaking to RTÉ, Ms Doyle said that she went over to the car as she knew something was wrong and she found the pregnant woman lying on the seat. “She said to me ‘Get ready to catch my baby’ and I literally caught her baby.”

The baby was delivered and they wrapped her in a blanket as they waited for emergency services to arrive. The little girl weighed in at 7lb and both mother and baby are now safe and sound recovering from the ordeal at St Luke’s hospital.
