The Dublin venue says it “stands firmly behind the people and nation of Ukraine”.

The Bord Gáis Energy Theatre has cancelled performances of Swan Lake from the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre that it was due to hold from next month.

It comes after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine earlier in the week.

Almost 200 Ukrainians, including three children, have been killed, Ukraine’s Health Minister reported on Saturday (26 February).

In a statement posted to Twitter the same day, the Dublin venue said:

“The Bord Gáis Energy Theatre stands firmly behind the people and nation of Ukraine and has today taken the decision to cancel the upcoming performances of Swan Lake by St Petersburg Ballet Theatre which were scheduled to take place from 29 March to 3 April, 2022.

“We hope for a diplomatic, swift and more peaceful resolution to this tragic attack.

“We will be in touch with customers in the coming days with more information and we appreciate your patience at this time.”

This follows performances from the Royal Moscow Ballet that were set to take place at The Helix theatre on Dublin City University’s Glasnevin campus and the National Opera House in Wexford being cancelled.

“As a result of the truly shocking events that are unfolding in Ukraine, it is crucial that Dublin City University and all civilised countries take all practical steps to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, and send an unambiguous message to the Russian Government that their deplorable actions have consequences that will have impact across political, economic, sporting and cultural spheres at all levels,” the Helix said.
