Several families have begun an occupation at Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council this evening in protest at the chamber’s refusal to consider a motion to raise rent allowance caps and look for specific emergency accommodation in the area.

People Before Profit Councillors Melisa Halpin and Hugh Lewis had submitted a Section 140 motion to tonight’s meeting instructing the Manager to meet with the Ministers of Housing and Social Protection to look for immediate action with regard to housing shortage in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown.

“Housing has reached crisis point, on a daily basis families and individuals contact us As they face eviction.  It is next to impossible to find a home with in the allowable rent allowance caps.  We need to bring the appropriate level of serious to this issue,” said Cllr Lewis.

However, Deputy Richard Boyd Barrett this evening posted a message on Facebook to say that the Council had refused to discuss the motion, leading homeless families to occupy the building.
