There was a tragic story on Joe Duffy’s Liveline this afternoon as Ennis woman Josie O’Brien got in contact to tell Joe about a formerly homeless Polish man’s death in the town.

The man who is unnamed was found in his flat on Christmas Day but his family had no money to pay for funeral expenses.

Josie explained that the undertaker was not able to arrange the funeral as he had buried several homeless people and not been paid by social services to do the job.

An undertaker named Cyril Cusack, who is new to the Clare town then made a call to the show offering his services free of charge, stating: “We’ll give him a dignified burial.”

After this positive ending to the segment, host Joe Duffy announced that comedian Brendan O’Carroll had been in touch from Florida stating that he would pay for the man’s funeral expenses, with Duffy adding :”That’ll go into the pot as well.”

O’Carroll is known for his great generosity, having donated Christmas dinner to over 2,000 homeless individuals this past Christmas via Saint Vincent De Paul Ireland, as the Irish Examiner reported in December.
