Cat who walked 19 km back to owners who rejected him finds new home

Keeley Ryan

His story went viral after it was shared earlier this year.

A heartbroken cat who walked 12 miles to be reunited with his family – only for them to demand he be put down – as found a new home.

Toby, a seven-year-old ginger cat, had been given to another family by his original owners – but after being confused as to why he was abandoned, the feline trekked the whole way home.

A whole 19km (12 miles).

When he arrived, though, the family were not happy at all to see him.

They brought Toby to a local animal shelter, asking the staff if they could euthanise the adorable cat – and the staff, thankfully, didn’t carry out their request.

Instead, they got in touch with an animal charity and explained the case.

They rang up the SPCA of Wake County, which is over in North Carolina, and asked if they would be able to take in the sweet cat and help find him a new home.

The SPCA shared the feline’s story on Facebook, explaining:

“When Toby’s family no longer wanted him, they gave him to another family.

“But Toby missed them, and walked 12 miles (19km) back to his home.

“When he arrived, he was met with heartbreak.

“The family he thought had loved him took him to a shelter and asked staff to euthanize him.

“The shelter called us at the SPCA to ask if we could take him in and help him find a new family. “

Toby arrived at the SPCA in February this year, where he was properly looked after and completely showered with love.

And while it took a few weeks of waiting, he did manage to find his furver home.

Finding new places to relax!!

On April 13, Toby was adopted – and now lives in a home with three siblings,  one cat one and two human ones.

His new owners have set up an Instagram account, letting people across the globe who have been moved by Toby’s story keep up with his adventures.
