Children's charity Childline has said that it will be forced to close its nightly helpline until it raises over €1m in a new emergency appeal.
The organisation is largely funded by donations from the public and currently runs a 24 hour helpline for children in need, which receives 1,800 calls per day.
However, it has come under major financial pressure of late and has now launched an emergency 'no child should be forced into silence' appeal for November, during which time it hopes to raise the €1.2m needed to keep the service running around the clock.
So far this year, Childline says that issues of abuse, personal welfare and mental health accounted for over 21 per cent of calls answered.
