‘Corona passes’ to be issued ahead of indoor dining return

Indoor dining is expected to return on 19 July.

As the government prepares for the return of indoor dining, over 1.8 million certificates which provide proof of vaccination will be distributed.

The Irish Examiner reports that indoor activity and international travel is expected to resume on 19 July, and these Covid-19 certificates will play a key role in reopening.

Last night, government officials met with representatives from the hospitality sector. They were told that they would receive clarity on reopening regarding theatres, pubs and restaurants by 12 July.

The vaccination certs are said to be a “stop-gap” as more time is required to develop a smartphone app.

Representatives from the hospitality industry opposed the use of certs, but the Examiner reported that they “softened” over the course of the meeting.

A source said: “The reality is if they don’t agree to some kind of option, they won’t reopen at all.”

Adrian Cummins, the CEO of the Restaurants Association Ireland, has said that the group will meet with the government again as a concrete plan is needed soon.

He said: “We need to try and have a plan in place that is viable and workable as soon as possible.”

The discussion over vaccine certs emerged after Micheál Martin announced plans to restrict indoor dining to those who have been fully vaccinated.

The Taoiseach said that this plan was the “safest way” to approach reopening, but the idea was met with opposition from a number of government members.

Labour leader Alan Kelly described it as “completely bananas” and “discriminatory”. Mr Kelly urged the government to rethink the plan and called for another meeting.

David Cullinane, the health spokesperson for Sinn Féin said that the proposal does not “sit easy” with him.
