Couple ‘distressed’ after finding hidden camera in Airbnb bedroom

The camera was disguised as a smoke detector.

About as creepy as it gets.

A couple have expressed their shock at finding that a camera was filming in the bedroom of their Airbnb rental.

Derek Starnes and his wife had travelled from their home in Indiana for a holiday in Longboat Key, Florida, according to ABC News.

Derek spotted that something looked a bit off with the smoke detector that was pointed towards the bed in the master bedroom and on closer inspection found that the small black spot on it was a hidden camera.

The camera was feeding video on to an SD card inside.

They immediately called the police.

“My wife and I are distressed by this situation,” he said. “I hope more victims will come forward.”

A still from footage captured on the hidden camera.

Police arrested Wayne Natt, the man who rented out the property on Airbnb. He has been charged with video voyeurism.

Natt had been renting on the site for two years and had over 40 reviews.

He admitted to having ‘dozens’ of videos of people at sex parties he held at the home but claimed any footage he had was captured consensual.

“We don’t know if there are local victims, someone who may have been dating him or a companion that doesn’t realize they are being videotaped, and then we have the other side of who he rented to through Airbnb,” said police lieutenant Bob Bourque.

“We are outraged at the reports of what happened,” said Airbnb spokesperson Benjamin Breit.

Airbnb has banned Natt from its site for life, he said.

“Our team has reached out to local law enforcement to aid them with their investigation of this egregious offense, and we hope justice is served.

“We take privacy issues extremely seriously and have a zero-tolerance policy against this behaviour.”
