“I’m allowing myself process it”

Dearbhla Mescal is documenting her next round of cancer treatment on social media as she battles multiple myeloma. She’s back in hospital receiving chemotherapy treatment at the moment.

The mum-of-three revealed earlier this year that she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, which is a type of bone marrow cancer that often affects several areas of the body, such as the spine, skull, pelvis and ribs.

Just weeks after appearing on the Academy Awards red carpet to support her Oscar-nominated son, Paul, Dearbhla is back at St James’ Hospital for her next round of chemo treatment.

While in hospital she said: “I am quite settled, I have my pictures on the wall. I’m ready for chemo.

“Thank you for all the lovely messages. I will do what I can when I can.

“I slept pretty okay and I’ve had my picc line put in. That is going to give me the start of the chemo and it will also feed me if I get too ill or if I need further pain meds.

“Other than that, people who work in this field are just wonderful. I am still assessing the place I’m in, and also the place I am in.

“I haven’t put the TV on yet, I haven’t put on my music yet. I’m literally sitting in the quiet and just allowing myself process it.”

“I don’t know how to explain the feelings I have”

Dearbhla was escorted to St James Hospital yesterday morning with her husband Paul Snr.

She’s been keeping her fans updated on her treatment through social media and intends to keep documenting her journey.

Before going into hospital, Derbhla told her followers that she’s feeling very blessed to be well.

She told them that before she was due to go in for treatment, she wanted to take her beloved dog for a walk because it would be a while before she’d be able to do that again.

She said: “I don’t know how to explain the feelings I have.

“I think I was getting anxious that it was going to take a long while for it to happen. In other words, I thought it would be after Easter because of holidays and staffing, all the normal stuff.”

She explained that being unwell has made her think about who she is and where she wants to go in life after she gets better.

She said: “So now that I am doing it, there are no words for how I am feeling.

“I’m feeling so lucky that I am feeling so well. I’m managing my pain, my daily energy and I’ve listened to my body and I think there is a key to that.

“The key to this is that you do listen to your body and I think that’s what I’ve done, I think, pretty well.”

She’s encouraging all her followers that are going through similar health issues to trust their body and their instincts.

She said: “If you have to say no to the coffee with friends or you have to say no to that night out or whatever it is, people who love you and care for you will understand.”
