The story of one Ireland’s most beloved national treasures, Donie O’ Sullivan, airs on RTÉ on Tuesday night.
Titled ‘Donie O Sullivan:Capitol Man’, the one-hour documentary details how Donie went from growing up in a small town in Co. Kerry to becoming an international name at CNN.
The 30-year-old made headlines a year ago when he reported live from the US Capitol riots in January 2021. Impressing viewers with his bravery and reporting skills, Donie’s name went viral.
And he’s only become even more successful since.
Throughout the documentary, the reporter is set to explore his work debunking fake news and misinformation, the legacy of the Trump presidency, and the rise of QAnon and extreme-right groups in the US.
He will also delve into his personal life and open up about his own struggles with mental health.

Hinting at what viewers can expect, Donie said:
“Kind of speaking of a surreal and overwhelming year, RTÉ came along to do a behind the scenes of some of the Trump rallies and things that we go to and follow us throughout the summer.
“They came along to Cahersiveen as well so hopefully folks get something out of it.
“John King is in there talking a lot about the role misinformation is now playing in American politics.”

Donie began his career as a journalist with Storyful before moving to CNN, where he has worked for the past six years.
He was nominated for an Emmy last year for his story on military reservist Maatje Benassi’s role at the centre of a patient-zero conspiracy theory.
Donie also made headlines over the weekend when he reported live from New York City helping an Irish couple got engaged.
