Donald Trump’s press secretary, Sean Spicer, has confirmed the US president has declared his inauguration day “a national day of patriotism”, in one of his first executive actions in the White House.

Trump frequently referred to patriotism in his inaugural address and in an order filed yesterday with the federal government, the newly sworn-in president said “a new national pride stirs the American soul and inspires the American heart.”

The order, titled “National Day Of Patriotic Devotion 9570,  A Proclamation By The President Of The United States Of America“, continues:

“There are no greater people than the American citizenry, and as long as we believe in ourselves, and our country, there is nothing we cannot accomplish.

Now, therefore, I, Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 20, 2017, as National Day of Patriotic Devotion, in order to strengthen our bonds to each other and to our country – and to renew the duties of Government to the people.”

The move follows some of the largest demonstrations in American history with numbers estimated between three and five million people in more than five hundred cities across the United States and worldwide.

The internationally co-ordinated protest marches are thought to be the first since the country’s invasion of Iraq in 2003.
