Central Dublin venue Andrew's Lane Theatre has been bought by private investors lead by Firebreak Hospitality.
The new owners intend to seek planning permission for a 115-bedroom hotel on the site.
The Irish Times understands that the hotel will offer compact rooms in the style of Pod Hotel or Yotel, with small but well-equipped rooms.
The compact style of hotel has been doing well in other European cities, and the buyers hope to echo this in their new project.
"This is a new concept for Dublin but experience in other cities shows that guests are happy to pay for smaller rooms to be in the heart of the city and are satisfied with the limited service in the hotel given the availability of food and drink locally."
Planning will take between nine months to a year, putting the projected opening date for the hotel early in 2018.
The property, which had been host to many club nights and theatre events in its lifetime, was put up for sale by receiver KPMG in March of this year.
The theatre was opened 18 years ago by Irish theatre icon Maureen Potter.
