EastEnders actor Hywel Bennett has died aged 73.

His actor confirmed the tragic news this afternoon.

Hywel joined the series in 2003 as gangland boss Jack Dalton, making a big impact in Albert Square during his two months there.

The character was the head of the criminal organisation The Firm, allegedly responsible for Den Watts’ murder in the 1980’s.

But Dalton’s arrival in EastEnders was tied to Den’s return – as he revealed that he was still alive and had fled to Spain.

The character ultimately met an untimely end when he was shot by Den’s son Dennis.

Welshman Hywel is probably best known for his work on the classic television show Shelley, in which he played the title role.

The sitcom ran for ten series and a DVD boxset is scheduled for release later this year.

He also featured in the 1979 TV mini-series Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy, sitcoms Last of the Summer Wine and 70’s mini-series Pennies from heaven.

Hywel leaves behind one daughter, Emma, who he had with his ex wife Cathy Mills.
