A father found critically injured metres away from his smothered son, has died in Cork University Hospital.

Andrzej Piolunowicz was found in a Killarney, Co.Kerry flat alongside his son, Karol Rozycki, who had been smothered.

Gardaí said that the hotel worker had sustained what they believed to be self-inflicted injuries to his neck, wrists and stomach.

Mr. Piolunowicz was treated in Kerry General Hospital before being transferred for specialist care in Cork University Hospital, but never regained consciousness after being discovered by his partner and Karol’s mother, Anna Rozycki.

The twenty-four-old mum found lifeless baby Karol and Mr Piolunowicz lying in a pool of blood at their apartment shortly after 6pm last Sunday, Mother’s Day.

The toddler was pronounced dead at the scene and his remains were flown back to Poland for his Mass of the Angels ceremony, following a memorial service by the Irish and Polish communities in Killarney last Tuesday.

Gardaí have not released the results of Karol’s postmortem, however it is believed he died of suffocation.
