A father-in-law from Essex has been jailed for 10 years after severely beating his daughter-in-law and almost blinding her, after he believed she’d committed adultery.

Manjit Mirgind stabbed his son’s wife, 29-year old Jageer Mirgind, several times in the face before attempting to strangle her. He also tried to gouge out both her eyes in front of her two young children.

The attack happened as a result of Mirgind, who is a Sikh, mistakenly believing his daughter-in-law was having an affair with a Muslim man.

Mirgind gave himself up to police shortly after the incident, who later took him to hospital for treatment to his knee and hand from which he sustained injuries from kicking and beating his daughter-in-law.

Jageer, who has been partially blinded in one eye and with blurred vision in the other, has lost use of her left wrist and damaged muscles in her neck following the attack. She has also undergone surgery but is left with permanent injuries.

Detective inspector John Delaney spoke about the severity of the case saying:

“The psychological effects on the victim in this case will remain long after her wounds have healed.

“When Manjit Mirgind launched this attack he was acting in the misguided name of ‘honour’, spurred on by a false belief that his daughter-in-law was having an affair with a man of another faith.

“The victim sustained an unprovoked, frenzied attack by a trusted family member in her own home which has resulted in her sustaining life changing injuries. She has shown tremendous courage and resilience in dealing with this incident which has not only affected her but two extended families within her community.”
