Fire breaks out on the roof of Trump Tower in New York

A fire has broken out near the top of Trump Tower in New York City.

Smoke could be seen on the top of the Manhattan skyscraper in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The fire is reported to have started around 7am local time near the top of the Fifth Avenue high rise, which contains both residences and businesses.

People have taken to social media to share photos and videos from near the scene.

According to TODAY, dozens of firefighters were called to the one alarm blaze shortly before 7am local time.

The cause of the fire is not immediately known, but has been reported to be due to an “electrical outage”.

There have been evacuations or major damage reported at this time.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries after some debris fell on him.

Meanwhile, an engineer inhaled some smoke after going up to the roof with a fire extinguisher.

He has refused medical treatment.

The President is not currently in residence at Trump Tower. People have been urged to avoid the area at this time.
