Leading airbag supplier Continental Automotive Systems has said that it supplied potentially defective air bag control units to five million vehicles including models from Honda, Fiat-Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz and three other manufacturers over a five year period.
According to Reuters, the electronic systems used by the bags may fail and consequently, the airbags may not deploy in a crash or deploy without prior warning.
The recall has involved almost 2 million in the United States alone. Honda has said there have been 74 airbag-related injury allegations made, including a child injured when a car crashed into a concrete wall with the airbags failing to deploy.
Fiat Chrysler have received reports of as many as 25 accidental airbag deployments.
This is the latest in a series of airbag related vehicle recalls, with Toyota currently embroiled in a similar situation with the airbag manufacturer Takata.
