Storm Fionn's arrival

Storm Fionn is on the way.

Met Éireann has just issued a Status Orange wind weather warning for the following counties: Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork and Kerry.

This particular warning is in place from today (Tuesday 16 January) at 3pm to Wednesday 17 at 3am.

It’s expected that the storm will make its way through the country later this evening, continuing into tonight ‘with gusts of up to 120 km/h and a risk of coastal flooding’.

There’s also the chance of ‘wintry showers’ but these are expected to ease off later tonight. Winds should calm in the early hours of the morning but ‘heavy and persistent rain’ is expected for the latter part of tomorrow.

These conditions will continue into tomorrow night and the national forecaster has suggested checking in to see if there are further weather warnings issued.

There are a number of other weather warnings in place including an update to a previous wind warning with a Status Yellow in place for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford.

This is in place from 11 am today to 3 am tomorrow and accompanies a snow-ice warning for the entire country which is also in place up until 3 am.

You can check out the list of warnings in full here.

Early indications for the latter part of the week include a ‘slight frost’ Thursday night which will turn to widespread frost on Friday night.
