Vodafone UK has today announced that hackers may have accessed the personal details of up to 2,000 customers.

According to reports, the mobile phone provider has stated that 1,827 accounts have been accessed by hackers.

It has also been reported that customers’ names, bank sort codes, mobile numbers and the last four digits of their bank accounts may have been accessed.

The news is proving to be a massive worry for Vodafone customers, and it is not yet know if Irish customers and their details have been affected.

“The incident was driven by criminals using email addresses and passwords acquired from an unknown source external to Vodafone,” a spokesperson stated.

“Whilst our security protocols were fundamentally effective, we know that 1,827 customers have had their accounts accessed.”

Vodafone has launched an investigation into the attack and have informed the banks of affected customers.

They also stated that no credit or debit cards details were accessed and that they are contacting those that have been affected to help them change their account details.

“Our investigation and mitigating actions have meant that only a handful of customers have been subject to any attempts to use this data for fraudulent activity on their Vodafone accounts.”
