Have you seen Matt Lucas’ bang on impression of Boris Johnson?

Leslie Ann Horgan

Sorry, not sorry.

There has been no small amount of disquiet over in the UK this week where the Government has set out its roadmap for easing the Covid-19 lockdowns.

First, there was widespread criticism of the measures that Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Sunday as not being clear enough. Then, there was disagreement from the authorities in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland who have decided to keep tighter restriction in place.

Then, a further update from the Prime Minister on Monday night, which included specific questions asked by member so the public via video link, left people even more confused as to exactly what the rules for social distancing now are.

If you didn’t laugh you’d cry – and one particularly funny take on the confusion came from Matt Lucas. The comedian posted a video to his Instagram on Sunday captioned only with ‘#clarity’.

In the video, which has over 500,000 views, Lucas does a remarkably accurate and altogether gas impression of a blustering Boris Johnson making some contradictory statements about going to work but staying at home. Watch the full clip below.

Best known for his work with comedy partner David Walliams on the likes of Little Britain, earlier this year Matt Lucas was announced as the new host for The Great British Bake Off, taking over from Sandi Toksvig. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown, however, filming on the show has been postponed indefinitely.

In the meantime, Matt has released a children’s book called Thank You Baked Potato which encourages little ones to stay indoors and wash their hands. All profits from the sale of the book go towards the Feed NHS project which, similar to the Feed the Heroes initiative in Ireland, is supplying free meals to frontline workers.
