A nine-year-old boy who was stabbed to death in a Michigan playground on Monday spent his dying breaths assuring his brother that it was not his fault.
According to reports on Tuesday, Michael "Connor" Verkerke was fatally stabbed with a kitchen knife by 12-year-old Jamarion Lawhorn. He was taken to hospital where he passed away a couple of hours after the attack.
The Daily Mail reported earlier this week that the attacker then approached a stranger and asked could he phone the police. Apparently, he told dispatchers: "Hi. I just stabbed somebody. Please pick me up?"
According to police, the suspect didn't know his victim and wasn't from the trailer park where Michael lived with his family. Michael had been playing in the playground with his brother and some friends.
Michael's brother attempted to rush him home to his parents. With his last breaths, the young boy told his brother: "If anything happens to me, it’s not your fault. I’ll always love you."
The community and family have come together to help the family work through this difficult time. On Monday, there was a vigil at the playground for the young boy and a Go Fund Me campaign has been put together to help the family pay for funeral costs.
The young 12-year-old is currently facing a murder charge.
