Investigation launched after ‘sudden death of an infant’ in Co Offaly

An investigation has been launched after the body of a newborn baby was discovered in Co Offaly.

The baby was delivered in a car near Birr, Co Offaly, on March 29, according to The Times Ireland.

The publication report that the infant died shortly after birth, and their body was discovered after a few days.

The death of the infant is said to have come to light after the mother went to the hospital.

A post mortem was carried out on April 1 at the Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore, where it was found the child died from natural causes.

A spokesperson for the gardai confirmed to Her that they are investigating the “sudden death of an infant”.

They also said that a file is currently being prepared for the Coroner.

 

The full statement read:

“Gardaí are investigating the sudden death of an infant in Birr, Co. Offaly on the 29th March 2018. 

“A post mortem examination was carried out on the 1st of April at the Midlands Regional Hospital [in] Tullamore which found that the child died from natural causes.

“A file will be prepared on the matter for the Coroner.”
