An Irish couple were left stunned today when they found out they had netted €250,000 in the Irish lottery.

The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, are from Dublin and have just returned home from a three-week holiday in Spain. They did not realise they had scooped the top prize of the Lotto Plus 2 draw until they remembered to check their ticket.

According to reports they were thrilled and amazed that the ticket had not been lost or destroyed during their stay in Barcelona.

“That ticket survived Barcelona, the pick-pocketing capital of the world!” the Dublin man laughed. “I buy a Lotto ticket every now and then, so I’d almost forgotten about it.”

The couple were over the moon when they picked up the winning cheque at National Lottery headquarters today, which they plan to put to good use.

“We plan to enjoy it, that’s for sure. We’ll do some travelling – maybe New York to start. I’ve family in America, so it will be good to have an excuse to visit them!”

The winning ticket was a €4 quick-pick ticket purchased in Centra, Annesley Bridge Road, Fairview Corner in Dublin.
