Katie Taylor’s response to losing out on Olympic medal is heartbreaking

She's still done us proud.

Laura Holland

Katie, you’ve still done us so proud.

Katie Taylor’s hopes of taking home an Olympic medal were dashed today as she lost out to Finland’s Mira Potkonen. She was competing in the last-eight of the women’s 60kg division.

They were tied on points and it went to the judges who made the final decision and chose Mira as the winner of the fight. Katie wasn’t able to secure the gold medal once again that she won in the London 2012 games.

RTÉ Sport spoke with Katie just after the fight and her reaction is heartbreaking. She reflects on a difficult year in the lead-up to this year’s games.

She can’t get a word out for the first 30 seconds and then says:

“It’s very disappointing. It’s been a very tough year. So a loss this year is very very hard to take. The Olympics is a dream for me and you know I came in here prepared very well. I gave it my best shot and it just didn’t happen, sometimes the plans you have in your heart aren’t God’s plans.

“I just have to thank everyone for all their support and prayers, I’m so humbled by that. It’s still such an honour and a privilege to be here and I just have to thank everyone for the support.”
