The Carlow native died last year trying to escape his attackers.

The grandparents of a teenage rapper accused of the murder of Cian English in May 2020 have offered their home as a collateral so he could be released on bail.

Lachlan Paul Soper-Lagas, 18, and four others are accused of causing English’s death after they attacked him, leading to him falling from a fourth floor balcony in Australia last year.

English and his family, who are originally from Bullock Park, on the edge of Carlow Town, moved to Brisbane in 2011.

It is said that on the night of his death, English had been attending a party during which five people, including Soper-Lagas, robbed him at knife point.

Afraid for his life, English is said to have tried to escape his attackers but was flung from the balcony during the incident.

English suffered traumatic injuries from his fall and later died.

Soper-Lagas defence lawyer Michael Copley’s argument for why his client should receive bail is that while the case against his client was “strong” but said he was “not a flight risk due to his strong family ties to the Queensland”.

The Brisbane police are also holding Soper-Lagas’ passport in their possession to prevent him from leaving the country.

When speaking about Soper-Lagas’ grandparents and their willingness to use their house in exchange for his release Copley said;

“The fact they’re prepared to put it up as part of the surety demonstrates their confidence in their grandson’s willingness to comply with court orders.”

During the attack on English, two teenage girls who also stand accused, filmed part of the attack.

Crown prosecutor Danny Boyle opposed bail on the grounds that video evidence captured the teenager threatening English and he showed “no concern” for his welfare after the fall.

The five accused of Cian English’s death are to re-appear before Southport Magistrates Court on March 23.
