A musical adaptation of Father Ted could be on the cards

This would sell out in seconds.

To this day, Father Ted remains one of the greatest things that Ireland has ever produced. The Graham Linehan comedy is beloved both in Ireland and the UK, even though so few episodes were ever made. Safe to say, it has been sorely missed since the untimely passing of actor Dermot Morgan.

Speaking to the Sunday Business Post, Linehan has revealed that the show could be revived on stage in a musical adaptation.

“I think if you look at something like the South Park boys and the Book of Mormon, that’s pretty hardcore and I think there is an argument you could make a Ted musical where you really go for the jugular and you get all the things people loved about it, all the innocence and all the sweetness, but introduce a harder edge.

"Because it’s such a special event, it would have to be about something that’s kind of world-shaking. It would have to be about Ted becoming Pope, or some weird succession thing that means Ted’s next in line. It would have to be substantial and big.”

While there are no proper plans in place to make it happen, it does sound like Linehan has thought about it a good bit, describing one scene in particular:  “The only thing that’s stuck in my head is a dance sequence in the Vatican with spinning cardinals. I can see that quite clearly.”

We won't rest until this happens.
