A newlywed couple were reportedly tied up and killed by the bride’s family who didn’t agree with their marriage.

Police in Pakistan told Sky News that 17-year-old Muafia Bibi and her husband, 30-year-old Sajjah Ahmed, were tied up and had their throats slit in a village in Punjab province.

Officer Asghar Ali confirmed that the teen’s grandfather, parents and two uncles have been apprehended. He also said they had lured the couple, who got married earlier this month, to the family home under the pretence that they had accepted their relationship.

According to police chief Gohar Nafees, the family admitted to killing Muafia and Sajjah in the name of honour and said they were embarrassed their daughter had married a man from a less important tribe.

This is not the first incident of this kind. In May Farzana Iqbal, who was three months pregnant, was stoned to death by her family for marrying the man of her choice.
