The controversy was sparked by her recent views on migrant deaths.

A petition calling for Katie Hopkins to lose her job as a newspaper columnist has received over 200,000 signatures.

Hopkins, who is known for her controversial and outspoken persona, enraged many with a recent article published in The Sun newspaper, in which she said she would “use gunships” to stop migrants entering the UK.

The column was published in the wake of the deaths of over 400 migrants as a result of a shipwreck in the Mediterranean and has sparked a campaign to see her fired by the publication for her actions.

A Change.org petition was set up by Izzy Saunders and has now reached over 200,000 signatures, with the public also donating £10,000 to Medecin San Frontiére who are helping in the migrant rescue efforts.

“Katie claims she ‘doesn’t care if migrants die’ which is an opinion she is entitled to, despite it being a sad and selfish one.

“I am not attacking her right to an opinion, however I do not believe The Sun newspaper should encourage these poisonous opinions. Presenting these extreme views as normal is dangerous and only encourages further demonisation of immigrants in our own country,” said Ms Saunders.
