Good news for humanity, the ozone layer is on the mend

Her

Roll on deodorant… and the weekend

It’s been a hell of a week for world news, the majority of it being pretty depressing. Alas, we finally have good news on the environmental front.

Since 2000, the hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica has decreased by 1.5 million square miles.

The ozone layer is the shield that protects our skin from harmful ultraviolet radiation coming from the sun. The hole, above Antarctica was discovered in the 1950s and since then scientists have scrambled to find ways to repair the fragile shield of gas above the earth’s atmosphere.

The main offender was, wait for it, Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s), chemicals that were found in fridges, aerosols, air conditioners and dry cleaning chemicals. These CFC’s are a type of Greenhouse Gas which is believed to contribute to global warming.

The data comes from the journal science and was carried out by researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Leeds who used a combination of weather balloons, satellites, and ground-based instruments to collect data.

Since the 70s there has been a phase out of substances containing these CFC’s and it appears to have worked!

Gals, it seems that switch to roll on deodorant really did the trick. If we all keep it up, the hole is expected to be fully recovered by 2050.

I for one would be in favour of researchers examining next, the contribution Donald Trump’s hair has made in diminishing the ozone in his inexorable attempt to tame that dodgy hairdo.
