The parents of a teenage girl who assaulted their daughter after she posted nude pictures of herself on Facebook have been spared jail by a Cork District Court.

A 15-year-old girl had her hair pulled and was kicked on the ground by her father, and was further assaulted by her mother over nude pictures she posted on social media, RTÉ reports.

The teenager, who has not been identified, alleged that her father pulled her hair and kicked her on the ground in an attempt to take her phone. The girl’s father denied kicking the teenager and defence solicitor Leo Murphy said the girl’s parents wished to prevent their daughter from putting herself in a vulnerable position by posting nude photos of herself.

The young girl in question also alleged that she left the family home but was assaulted by her mother when she returned. Inspector John Deasy told the court that there was a footprint on the teenager’s face.

Both parents, who have not been named in order to protect the girl’s identity, entered guilty pleas to the charges, although Mr Murphy said that they disputed aspects of the case that were put forward by the prosecution.

Judge Olann Kelleher described the case as very sad and handed down five-month suspended jail sentences to the girl’s parents.
