People are sharing shocking stories of racist incidents after Donald Trump’s election

This is difficult to read.

In the hours and days after the Brexit vote, there were increased reports of racist and xenophobic incidents across the United Kingdom.

The consensus then was that, even if not all of those who voted to leave the European Union were motivated by racism, there were racists among the population who saw the referendum result as giving them carte blanche to act on their abhorrent views.

Plenty of people have compared some elements of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign to the worst rhetoric of the Vote Leave campaign on these shores, and now it seems America is witnessing a similar backlash from people who have felt empowered by Trump’s election as the country’s next leader.

Genius senior editor Insanul Ahmed has been documenting a number of them in a Twitter moment entitled ‘Day 1 in Trump’s America‘.

A warning that what follows contains details of racist, sexist and Islamophobic incidents, which many may find upsetting.

The accounts shared by Ahmed detail racism against Muslim Americans, Hispanic Americans and African Americans, as well as wider sexist incidents, with many of the perpetrators directly citing president-elect Trump and/or comments he has made.

They also show the climate of fear brought about in the United States, which is affecting schoolchildren as well as adults, and isn’t limited to just one part of the country.

More and more messages have been flooding Ahmed’s way, with people sharing their experiences of the first 24+ hours since the Republican candidate was elected president.
