The attack took place this morning.

Russian forces have shelled a mosque in the city of Mariupol where over 80 adults and children had taken refuge, the Ukrainian government says.

Ukraine’s foreign ministry said:

“The mosque of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and his wife Roxolana (Hurrem Sultan) in Mariupol was shelled by Russian invaders.

“More than 80 adults and children are hiding there from the shelling, including citizens of Turkey.”

Any casualties have yet to be reported.

Also on Saturday morning, Ukrainian officials said Russian forces damaged a cancer hospital and several residential buildings in the southern city of Mykolaiv with shelling.

The hospital’s head doctor, Maksim Beznosenko, said several hundred patients were in the hospital but that no one was killed.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has accused Russia of refusing to let people leave Mariupol, where a blockade has left hundreds of thousands trapped.

Russia continues to deny targeting any civilian areas since launching its “special military operation” in Ukraine on Thursday 24 February.

But according to the World Health Organisation, Russian forces have hit more than twelve hospitals during that time.

On Wednesday, it was reported that Russian forces had shelled a maternity hospital in Mariupol.

A statement from Mariupol’s City Council said that two adults and a six-year-old girl were killed after the building was “completely destroyed” and that 17 others were injured.

Ukrainian President Vlodoymyr Zelensky shared footage of the attack onto his Twitter and pleaded with global powers to do more and to close their airspaces.
