Second weather warning issued for 14 counties ahead of Storm Eleanor

A second weather warning has been issued for fourteen counties ahead of Storm Eleanor.

The orange wind caution was put into place for Dublin, Carlow, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, South Galway, Clare, Limerick and Tipperary. It comes into effect at 5pm on Tuesday January 2 and ends at 10pm that night. According to forecasters, the storm will move quickly across the country during the evening and during the night. West to southwest winds with average speeds of 65 to 80 km/h, gusting to 110 to 130 km/h. Damaging gusts are also expected during this time. It comes as a country-wide wind warning was put into place earlier on New Year's Day. The yellow wind warning will begin at 5pm on Tuesday January 2 and will stay in place until 9pm on Wednesday January 3. It cautions that west to southwest winds with average speeds of 55 to 65 km/h, gusting to 90 to 110 km/h, will begin to develop on Tuesday evening. The winds will continue through Tuesday night and Wednesday, with a potential for even stronger winds developing locally or for a time on Tuesday evening, with damaging gusts. Met Eireann forecasters warn that there will be very high seas along the Atlantic coasts, with the risk of coastal flooding.
