A sperm whale has been found dead with nearly 6kg of plastic in its stomach.

The whale was discovered off the coast of Indonesia earlier this week with 115 plastic cups and 25 plastic bags inside of its body.

Flip flops, plastic bottles, rope, and pieces of tarpaulin were also found inside of the whale’s stomach.

The whale was found dead in Wakatobi National Park in Southeast Sulawesi province on Monday.

The exact cause of death of the creature has not yet been determined, but environmentalist groups have said that it is likely that plastic “triggered” it.

Indonesia is one of the globe’s leading contributors of ocean waste. The country is thought to produce 1.29 million metric tonnes of marine rubbish every year.

WWF Indonesia has condemned the sperm whale’s death and is calling for boosted recycling services and cleanup campaigns among the public.
